You have all been waiting for this. Between reading the introduction to retargeting and our follow up post to the advantages of retargeting, here comes the article you have been waiting for…

Can we have a drum roll please? Here are the steps on how you should set up your retargeting campaign. Now you can knock your remarketing strategy right out the ring.

  1. Who do you want to target?

The first crucial step to a retargeting campaign is to create a persona of the target. Who will you be targeting? Will you be retargeting all visitors of your website? Or would you rather retarget a specific number of people who viewed a particular product or landing page? These needs to be taken into consideration before you proceed to the next steps.

  1. Create your remarketing code.

The second step is to create your remarketing code. If you’re using Google Adwords, click here for the Retargeting Steps for Adwords. This will be the snippet of code that you will be using for your retargeting campaign.

  1. Create your remarketing list

The third step is to create a remarketing list. This list will be for identifying key groups in your retargeting campaign. Here you will start to utilize the personas that will be included in a particular list. This is where you segregate the personas you have collected in the first step. There can be a specific retargeting list for new visitors, for cart abandoners, or a combination of different scenarios.

If you followed step one correctly, you will have an idea on how you want your customers to be retargeted by checking your sales pipeline. If you still don’t know how to do this, please check our 10 week Digital Marketing Superhero course.

Once you have completed these three steps, you are set to go. The final step is to copy the remarketing code to every page of your site that you want retargeting implemented. Voila! It’s that easy! Surprised?

Digital Marketing Superhero Tip: You should not be surprised if you have to attach a different remarketing code on different pages. Different pages usually have different personas targeted, so it makes sense to have a different code snippet for each page.
